The ink used by most tattoo shops in the United States contains some carcinogenic chemicals. A recent study has expressed such fears.

Researchers at the State University of New York at Binghamton tested about 56 types of ink used by American tattoo artists. Among them, about 23 hazardous azo compounds were found in the inks. Apart from this, harmful substances like carcinogenic aromatic amines, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have also been found. Such harmful chemicals increase the risk of allergies, skin rashes, and even cancer, according to researchers.

A statement in this context has been given by the ‘American Chemical Society’. The statement said, “There is little knowledge between tattoo artists and the general public about the ink used in tattoos and the materials they are made of.” This initiative is to raise awareness in this regard.

Before going for a tattoo, many people check various websites. Researchers want to use that opportunity. Thinking of putting detailed information on the website about the ink used in tattooing and the process of making it to make the public aware in advance. Earlier it was said by the European Commission that chemicals that harm the skin cannot be used in cosmetics. The ban was implemented in about seven European countries.

In all these cases alternatives to harmful chemicals were asked to be used. Where there is absolutely no alternative, one must wait until something new is discovered. Although America has not banned the use of tattoo ink like Europe, it has taken such steps considering the health of Americans.
